Vantage Points: Women Artists and The Landscape
Featuring Mei Mei Chang, Martha Crawley, Chris Luckman, Nancy Randa, Katharine Shuman, and Katie Jett Walls
Interaction with nature and the landscape is a deeply human act - a bridge between our animal brains and our communicative minds. From time immemorial, we’ve sought to express connection with the natural world in ways both pragmatic and transcendent. Women have always been a part of that creation and expression, but often women have been relegated to subjects within those landscapes, rather than the minds from which the art is drawn.
“Vantage Points: Women Artists and the Landscape” brings together six DC-based women artists, all of whom are current and past members of the artist collective at DC Arts Studios. Each of these women approach their creative expressions of the natural world differently, but each is fully in command of her perspective, centered not as a subject but as creator within the natural world. In addition to the artworks on display, these artists are opening up their process to gallery visitors with installations of reference material and inspiration behind the landscape pieces you on view.
